BKC IV: German Relief Attempt
Russian and German Armored Attacks
While we had several early war winter battles, it was time to move to the later stages of WW2. With the completion of the summer project, which was to build up 1944-45 Russian and German forces in winter camouflage. We usually do a game on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so this time it would see a Russian armored thrust to exploit an opening in the German defenses while the Germans were trying to re-link with some defenders around a train station. The game did not start out well for the Russians when their leading T-34/85 brigade went up against a Stug-III company deployed behind a railway embankement, losing several platoons. The Russians regrouped, however, and pressed the attack, aided greatly by heavy doses of artillery. The main German attack bogged down due to some bad command rolls and stiff resistance by the Russians on the only hill in the area. After very heavy fighting the Russians got up to the town and railway station, which were two of the five objectives on the board. When we called the game the Russians were barely ahead, but it was a pretty close and exciting affair.
