AOD: Cavalry Clash Changes Battle
German Heavy Cavalry Triumphant!
Hard to imagine, but we had not played a Renaissance game in quite some time! With Covid, time seems to have passed much more quickly than we thought, so it was time to get back to this interesting period with a 1525 era French vs. Imperialists clash. This was an unusual battlefield in that the town was right in the center, which made everyone change their deployments and turned into almost two separate battles; one on each side of the town! The Swiss and German pike moved out towards their inevitiable clash, while on the flanks the cavalry and light troops started some interesting fights. All of these troops had low morale grades, so by the third or fourth turn, half of them had fled! In the center there were some huge pike battles which were bloody as always, while on the other side of the town the Spanish were taking it to the Swiss, which was unexpected. The decisive clash came on the Imperialist right flank where a unit of German heavy cavalry fought not one, but two French gendarmes cavalry units, which were the cream of the French army. They routed the first unit, charged the second while disorganized, then crashed into the first unit again while it was still routing! The entire French flank collapsed and with it any chance of a French victory this night. A great game that was a lot of fun.
