BKC2

Blitzkrieg Commander 2 has quickly become our preferred set of WW2 rules for operational level scenarios. BKC 2 revolves around its command system, which while simple in concept, is very effective for this level of combat. The rules cover close assaults, scheduled bombardments, engineering, and more in an organized fashion that makes the system easy to grasp and highly suitable for group play. There are extensive army lists that cover the period from the Spanish Civil War to the end of WW2 with stats for every vehicle, artillery piece, or type of infantry that served in the war. Very similar to the Warmaster system, so if you've played that you can transition quickly to BKC 2. The third edition is due out soon, so we thought that we should get back to playing this as often as possible to get ready for when it does arrive.

BKC2: Battle at the Railyard

Desperate Defense Against Armored Attack

With BKC3 due out soon we figured it was time to get going again on playing this set of rules. Now that we have British, U.S., and Russian forces to face off against the Germans, we have a lot of options about what to choose for scenarios. This gaming night would see a U.S. armored force that had advanced too far and was cut off during the night by German forces. A strong German counterattack force was massing and would atempt to destroy the U.S. force holed up behind a river. The U.S. forces would attempt a relief effort, driving forward with several companies of armor, mech infantry, and light tanks, plus artillery support to link up with the trapped force. The rail line and its associated buildings were supposed to be a temporary obstacle and the main action would be in the center of the board as both sides' armored forces met. In the end, the raill line became THE battlefield!

The U.S. forces struck first, driving several columns close to the rail line where they were met by fire from the German defenders. Both sides had bad command rolls all night long, so the U.S. forces got caught up in a trafic jam, which gave the Germans a chance to roll up the counterattack force, starting a massive armored battle that would last until the end of the game. The U.S. forces kept feeding more and more units into the battle, finally overwheming the German defenders and punching through the German defenses. The Germans had dealt a huge blow to one of the U.S. armored forces' flanks, but in the end they couldn't generate enough combat power or command rolls to plug the gaps and the game was called as a U.S. victory.
